NEW VOICES FROM THE MAIJUNA, ANALYZE AND EXPOSE SOLUTIONS TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS OF THEIR COMMUNITIES

During February, March and April of 2024, twenty indigenous leaders of the Maijuna will participate in their communities in “Communication for social change” workshops in Loreto, Peru. In this way, we seek to make visible, from the voices of indigenous peoples, stories that show the threats to biodiversity and livelihoods in their territories.

IV MEETING OF AMAZON ANCESTRAL KNOWLEDGE: INDIGENOUS LEADERS SHARE TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TERRITORY

With the purpose of generating spaces for exchange, reflection and dialogue that make visible the importance of the territory from the vision of different indigenous peoples and the associated problems, the forum “Amazonian Ancestral Knowledge: A New Vision of the Future” was held in Iquitos, an event where indigenous leaders, environmental defenders and State entities participated.

 

PERU: INDIGENOUS LEADERS OF LORETO AND MADRE DE DIOS EXCHANGE EXPERIENCES FOR THE PROTECTION OF THEIR TERRITORIES

A delegation from the Maijuna, Kichwa and Murui indigenous peoples of Loreto visited Puerto Maldonado to learn about the impacts of the Interoceanic Highway and illegal mining. Since the Peruvian Government has promoted the construction of the Bellavista – Mazán – Salvador – El Estrecho Highway in Loreto, the communities have expressed their rejection because it directly threatens their way of life, culture and ancestral territories.

FECONAMNCUA Congress 2023: A space for dialogue to strengthen the governance of indigenous peoples in Loreto

In order to generate spaces for dialogue to strengthen the governance of indigenous peoples, the Federation of Maijuna Native Communities (FECONAMAI) was invited to join, through its president Rúsber Tangoa, who shared the objectives and challenges of their communities in the face of threats to their culture and territory.
