In a year of unprecedented challenges, one thing hasn’t changed. The commitment of the Maijuna indigenous group of the Peruvian Amazon to protect their ancestral lands, communities, and traditional culture remains strong and deep. OnePlanet is more committed than ever to help support and empower the Maijuna in their fight.

Regrettably, threats to Amazonian indigenous peoples have not diminished during the global pandemic and, in many areas, have in fact intensified. Of most concern to the Maijuna is a proposed 130-km-long road with an accompanying 10-km-wide development corridor that the Peruvian government wants to build through Maijuna ancestral lands. This project has gained momentum over the past year and it would devastate their ancestral lands and traditional culture, as has happened to so many other indigenous groups in the Amazon. The Maijuna are adamantly against this road project and it is therefore critical to continue the fight even during these challenging times.
